Bill Gates: Within 18 months, AI will be used to teach literacy to children.

(Artificial intelligence news)Within the next 18 months, AI chatbots may be used to help students with their reading and writing, according to Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

At the ASU+GSV Summit in San Diego, Gates said at a fireside chat that “AIs will get to that ability, to be as good a tutor as any human ever could.”

In recent months, AI chatbots have advanced quickly and can now compete with human intellect on several standardised tests, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard.

According to Gates, it has historically been challenging for computers to teach writing skills because they lack the cognitive capacity to imitate human thought processes. AI chatbots can recognise and mimic human-like language, though.

Within the next 18 months, AI chatbots may be used to help students with their reading and writing, according to Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

Before it to be a useful tutor, the technology must advance, and according to Bill Gates, for AI to be more effective at motivating students, it must get better at reading and replicating human language.

Though it may seem odd that reading and writing come before math in expectations for chatbot success, math is frequently employed to create AI technology, and chatbots struggle with mathematical calculations.

The chatbot can answer if a solution to the arithmetic problem already exists in the datasets that it was trained on. However, Gates noted that computing its own solution is more difficult and calls for greater reasoning skills.

Within the next two years, according to Gates, technology will advance, and this might make private tutoring more accessible to a variety of children who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

Although there are now some chatbots that are available for free, Gates anticipates that more sophisticated versions will cost money, but he thinks they will still be more affordable and available than one-on-one tutoring with a human teacher.
