Quarterback
(TV GUIDE) – With this examination of the most crucial position in all of sports—the NFL’s pigskin-slingers—Netflix’s unrelenting assault on sports docuseries continues. Expect unlimited access to the lives of its subjects, including Kirk Cousins, the quarterback and minivan driver for the Minnesota Vikings, Patrick Mahomes, the top quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Marcus Mariota, the Atlanta Falcons’ scapegoat. It’s fantastic for NFL fans who want to relive the 2022 campaign—unless you root for the squads that Mahomes thrashed on his way to a second MVP award and a Super Bowl victory.
The Witcher
Number of seasons: 3
Henry Cavill plays Geralt of Rivia, the world-weary monster-slayer who is burdened by destiny with defending the magical Crown Princess Ciri (Freya Allan) from a variety of pursuers who are all want her for their own sinister purposes, in this fantasy film version of the book series. Seasons 2 and 3 settle in from Season 1, which had a timeframe that was so difficult to follow that jokes about it appeared in Season 2. But it’s still a hard-core fantasy programme that will please Andrzej Sapkowski’s most nerdy fans. Cavill leaves the show after Season 3 and Liam Hemsworth will take over as the series’ protagonist in Season 4.
Break Point
With Break Point, Netflix aspires to do for tennis what Drive to Survive achieved for Formula 1. The tennis documentary series offers a behind-the-scenes look at some of the “next-generation” athletes in the sport—mostly those who aren’t Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, or Roger Federer—as they strive to advance to the next level. For seasoned tennis fans, the five episodes that make up the first half of the season’s first half are almost too basic. However, as the season goes on, Break Point explores some fascinating subjects, most notably the psychological toll that this competitive sport takes on its participants and the challenges that women in the sport confront.
Our Planet I and II
The eco-conscious nature documentary series The Planet crew, which was born out of the global popularity of the Planet Earth series, is returning with its second season. The recently released second season explores animal migration patterns while also raising alarms about how the planet’s changing climate is upsetting the delicate balance of life. It can be depressing because illustrating how animals respond to this new order of things isn’t always pleasant, but it still holds the title as one of the best depictions of the animal kingdom.
Never Have I Ever
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan plays Devi Vishwakumar, a high achiever desperate to reinvent herself following the tragic death of her father (Sendhil Ramamurthy, joining the ranks of TV’s gorgeous dads even in flashbacks), in Mindy Kaling’s charming, brilliantly comic take on a traditional high school comedy. John McEnroe, a tennis legend, comically describes the short-tempered Devi’s inner life as she negotiates a love triangle and downplays the severity of her sadness. Who knew John McEnroe needed to mention “thirst trap” for us all to understand? Devi doesn’t skirt around her emotions, which gives the series’ conclusion a strong sense of closure.
Tour de France: Unchained
The most prestigious and challenging cycling race in the world is the subject of another excellent addition to Netflix’s expanding roster of sports documentaries. The French production brings the best cyclists in the world inside the peloton as they test their physical boundaries, suffer terrible accidents, and go to any lengths to win the yellow shirt. Compared to other Netflix sports documentaries, this one is a little more intense.
Siren: Survive the Island
With this harsh team-based tournament that puts teams of women against one another, Korean television moves one step closer to making Squid Game a reality. In a game similar to Capture the Flag but tougher, squads of four made up of hardworking professionals—firefighters, soldiers, policewomen, etc.—battle it out on a desolate island. The violence ramps up due to the fierceness of the women, and when it’s time to attack one another’s bases, Team Athlete won’t hesitate to use judo techniques to take out rival players. With the addition of mini-games, a special money system that enables teams to purchase survival gear, and covert alliances, you have one of the most alluring reality shows available.
Vortex
Featuring a blend of sci-fi, romance, and a murder mystery, this six-episode French series from 2022 is a huge popularity with reviewers and audiences in its native country and is supported by outstanding performances from its protagonists. In Vortex, a police officer named Ludo (Tomer Sisley) investigates a crime using cutting-edge virtual reality technology. His wife Melanie (Camille Claris), who died in 1998, reappears in 2025. Despite the fact that Ludo has moved on and had a new family, he and Melanie attempt to stop Melanie’s death in 1998 and learn that, despite the two incidents being 27 years apart, they might be related (and that changing the past has repercussions). Anyone looking for a fantastic sci-fi/romance hybrid will find it to be intriguing and enigmatic, and it’s a beautiful hidden gem.
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson
Sometimes what you desire is to see your true self reflected on television, together with your animal instincts at their most primitive. Robinson plays a variety of bizarre characters in this exhilarating roller coaster of a sketch series, all of whom have big personalities and strong opinions about things that don’t really matter. One of these is his highly relatable hot dog mascot, who refuses to acknowledge that he was the one to crash his car into a storefront. It’s kind of hard to convey, like anything that’s really, really funny. To understand, all you need to do is watch.
FUBAR
One of Hollywood’s unwritten laws is that ageing action heroes MUST feature in a project in which they portray retired super agents who are forced back into action for some ridiculous reason, all the while being teased for being too old for this s—. And you keep producing these things if you’re one of the greatest action heroes of all time. In this action comedy, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a CIA agent who is recalled to duty to save his daughter, who also works for the agency. They were completely unaware of one another’s CIA affiliation! Even if it’s cheesy and not for everyone, you can have a nice time if you embrace that fact.
XO, Kitty
With the release of this new series based on the popular Netflix movies, the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before Cinematic Universe (the TATBILBCU) will once again be explored. Jenny Han, who also penned the books that served as the basis for the films, is the creator of XO, Kitty, which follows Kitty Covey (Anna Cathcart) as she relocates to Seoul to enrol at the same boarding school her late mother attended. It helps that her distant boyfriend Dae (Choi Min-young) visits there as well. However, when that connection runs into trouble, Lara Jean’s younger sister will need to decide what she really wants.
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story
A prequel Bridgerton series is a no-brainer. This limited series explores Queen Charlotte’s ascent to power and her turbulent (though still extremely sexy, of course) marriage to King George III. India Ria Amarteifio plays the role of Queen Charlotte in both the elder and younger versions of the series.
Sweet Tooth
Yes, it is another drama about a horrific illness that kills most of humanity, but it also features adorable children that are half animals and half humans. Gus (Christian Convery), a mutant youngster with deer antlers who battles against some villains who wish to round up his type in the belief that murdering him will solve their problems, and a reluctant hero (Nonso Anozie) who strives to protect Gus are the main characters of this fantasy series.
Firefly Lane
Firefly Lane, a lady pals drama starring Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke as best friends whose friendship spans the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and ’00s and goes through plenty of ups and downs, is Netflix’s gold standard for “Why am I watching this?” material. Although it is by no means high-quality television, it is unquestionably watchable in one sitting. The final episodes of the show debuted on April 27.
The Diplomat
Keri Russell, the breakout star of Cocaine Bear (can you believe), stars in The Diplomat, a political drama that reintroduces the Americans alum to television and to the world of global intrigue. Russell portrays Kate Wyler, a diplomat who tackles international difficulties while avoiding the spotlight after being abruptly named the new American ambassador to the United Kingdom. The West Wing and Homeland’s former writer and producer Debora Cahn is the showrunner of the series, which has a solid reputation for political television but also enjoys having fun. Kerry Connolly
Chimp Empire
Many people are seeing comparisons between this nature documentary and the HBO programme Succession, which centres on simians who compete for dominance with other family members. James Reed (My Octopus Teacher), an Oscar-winning filmmaker, explores two rival chimpanzee clans in the Ugandan woodlands and reveals a rich and complicated social order, which is underlined by the suffering of one generation of monkeys waiting for the ageing alpha to relinquish power. This four-episode miniseries is intriguing to watch, especially with Mahershala Ali’s slick narration.
Emergency: NYC
The 2020 medical docuseries’ spiritual successor A profoundly intimate look at front-line healthcare providers in New York City as they cope with the demands of both their professional and personal life is shown in Lenox Hill, Emergency: NYC. Emergency: NYC, which is set in the middle of the COVID pandemic, shows the doctors, nurses, and EMTs dealing with a new wave of patients who either ignored problems or were turned away from care because hospitals were overcrowded. Its unwavering access results in both heartbreaking tragedy and moments of utter ecstasy.
The Night Agent
The Shield, Timeless, and Terriers are among excellent TV programmes that Shawn Ryan has created. While his newest, The Night Agent, may not be on the same level as his past successes, it’s still a quick binge that stays in Ryan’s lane. Based on Matthew Quirk’s book, the political action thriller follows a low-level FBI agent who operates a covert phone line in the White House basement. When the phone doesn’t ring, his job is boring. Then, everything hinges on exposing a conspiracy that extends all the way to the top.
Outlast
Similar to the History Channel series Alone, 16 participants are dropped into the Alaskan wilderness with little more than their wits for this survival game, but this time they must cooperate as a team. Drama, as you already know. The eight episodes of the first season are full of it as teams discover that the biggest threat to winning the $1 million prize is a team that disregards morals.
Outer Banks
The Outer Banks is now more of a state of mind than it is a physical location. The action is transported to the Caribbean and beyond in Season 3 of Outer Banks as the Pogues are dragged into a perilous search for a forgotten city. The major John B. (Chase Stokes) family reveal from Season 2 sets up the latest season, which was released in the dead of winter despite the prior seasons being released during a more pleasant season. A summer display can also be a way of thinking.
Red Rose
This BBC import focuses on reducing children’s screen time by reducing their lifespan! The eight-episode horror series Red Rose is aimed at today’s youth. It follows a group of teens who download a phone app that sends them on progressively risky adventures and occasionally results in their premature deaths due to a supernatural presence. The themes of sorrow, class, and peer pressure are all addressed in Red Rose in addition to the phobia of running out of batteries. It’s not required viewing, but it’s spooky enough to keep you from becoming bored.
You
The fourth season of Netflix’s spooky stalker drama features Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgely), but this time the stalker might actually be the stalkee! The former New York assassin who now lives in Los Angeles is bringing his dubious skills to Europe, where he will pose as a professor, keep eyes on his librarian crush (Tati Gabrielle), receive texts from a stalker, and hang out with rich jerks. You can remove the guy from Gossip Girl, but I believe you can’t remove Gossip Girl from the man.
Cunk on Earth
This parody of a BBC documentary series was co-written by Charlie Brooker of Black Mirror and looks at the entirety of human civilization via the dimwitted Philomena Cunk, whose knowledge of history is comparable to that of someone who has sustained multiple severe concussions. The comic Diane Morgan’s portrayal of Cunk, who mimics British icon Ali G. by asking history professors the most ridiculous questions you’ve ever heard, is hilarious every time. It is just stupidly great.
Lockwood & Co.
Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish produced this entertaining British comedy about a world where ghosts are common, so society looks to teenagers as the only ones who can save them. teens, specifically those with psychic abilities. Lockwood & Co. is a three-teen outfit that conducts the work without the pretence, unlike the majority of spook hunters who work for companies run by adults (eww). One of Netflix’s best young adult programmes to date, it combines British science fiction, frightening tales, and a killer goth music soundtrack.
Sky Rojo is Lex Pina in full force. After the success of Money Heist, Pina was given free freedom to offer his fashionable sense of violence, crime, and sex in future projects. Three sex workers in the Canary Islands are the subject of a Spanish television series that follows them as they flee their pimp while doing all in their power to avoid being caught. It’s action-packed pulp entertainment, but despite its brief run durations (often 30 minutes or less every episode), it spends a lot of time making these women into more compelling characters than you might anticipate. Although it isn’t for everyone, it really is for the intended audience. Release of Season 3 occurred in January 2023.
